He was born in Montrose, Colorado, in 1905. His family moved to Grand Junction, Colorado, a few years later. When his father died, Dalton had to work very hard to help his mother. For nine years, he worked the night shift wrapping bread at a bakery. During this time, he also studied at two different universities. He even wrote many short stories and novels that were rejected at first. He did not let these hard times stop his dream of being a writer.

In the 1930s and 1940s, Trumbo became a top writer in Hollywood. He earned a lot of money for his scripts during this time. He wrote for movies like *Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo* in 1944. However, things changed in 1947 during a big investigation. A group called the House Un-American Activities Committee wanted to find Communist people in movies. Trumbo was part of a group called the Hollywood Ten. They refused to answer the committee's questions.

Because of this, Hollywood used a blacklist to stop them from working.

Even though he was blacklisted, Trumbo kept writing in secret. He used fake names, called pseudonyms, to write his movie scripts. He worked on many films while living in Mexico City. Because he used fake names, he could not take credit for his wins. He actually won two Academy Awards for his stories. One was for *Roman Holiday* in 1953. Another was for *The Brave One* in 1956. He had to use a different name or a front writer to get these awards. He stayed dedicated to his craft despite the many rules against him.

Eventually, Trumbo's hard work helped end the blacklist for others. In 1960, he finally received public credit for the films *Exodus* and *Spartacus*. This was a huge moment for him and other writers. The Academy finally gave him his real Oscar in 1975. Many years later, the Writers Guild even gave him full credit for *Roman Holiday*. His life shows how one person can stand up for what they believe. He remains a very important figure in the history of American movies.
