He wrote many great movies. Some of his films include *Roman Holiday* and *Spartacus*.

In 1947, a group called the House Un-American Activities Committee started an investigation. They wanted to find Communist people in the movie industry. Trumbo was part of a group called the Hollywood Ten. They refused to answer questions to the committee. Because of this, Hollywood used a blacklist. A blacklist meant they were not allowed to work.

Trumbo did not stop writing. He worked in secret. He used fake names, called pseudonyms, to write scripts. He even won two Academy Awards during this time. These are big awards for movies. However, he could not take the credit. He won for *Roman Holiday* and *The Brave One*.

Later, his work helped end the blacklist. People finally gave him credit for his skills. In 1975, the Academy gave him his Oscar.
