Spotted skunks are small, black animals with white patterns. These patterns can be stripes or blotches.

They belong to a group called Spilogale. In this group, males are often much larger than females. The males also have much longer tails. These skunks live in many different places. They are found in most of the United States. They also live in many parts of Mexico. Some species even live in Canada.

Different skunk species like different homes. The Eastern spotted skunk likes forest edges or grasslands. The Desert spotted skunk lives in dry deserts. Some live in tropical forests, too.

They like to live in dark dens. Many skunks use holes made by other animals. They might use a hole made by a gopher or an armadillo. Spotted skunks are very social animals. They often share a den with up to seven other skunks. However, mothers keep their babies in special dens. These dens are only for the mother and her young.

Spotted skunks have a very special way to stay safe. They can spray a strong, smelly oil.

This oil comes from two glands on their sides. They use muscles to aim the spray at a target. They can hit something up to 15 feet away. Before they spray, they give a warning. They might hiss or stamp their feet. They can even do a handstand on their front legs. This shows their tail to the danger. They can spray five times in a row. It takes about one week to make more oil.

These animals eat many different kinds of food. They are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and animals.

They eat insects, fruits, and berries. They also eat small animals like birds, lizards, or snakes. They use their keen sense of smell to find food. Their hearing is very sharp, but their vision is poor. A baby skunk grows very fast. They reach their full adult size in only four months. The males do not help the mothers raise the babies.

We must learn more about these animals to help them. The Eastern spotted skunk is a conservation concern. This means people are worried about them. In the 1940s, their numbers seemed to crash. Now, some agencies list them as endangered or threatened.

The Pygmy spotted skunk is also in trouble. It lives on the Mexican Pacific coast. It is one of the smallest carnivores in the world. We can learn how to protect their homes. This helps keep these small, patterned animals safe in the wild.
