Sports bra

language culture Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A sports bra is a special tool for physical exercise. It provides support to the breasts to help people feel better while they move. These bras are much sturdier than the ones people wear every day. They work by minimizing breast movement and helping to stop physical discomfort. Many women choose to wear them to reduce pain during workouts. Some designs are even made to be worn as outerwear while running.

There are two main ways these bras work to help the body. The first way is called compression. A compression bra holds the breasts firmly against the chest to restrict movement. The second way is called encapsulation. These bras use molded cups that fit around each breast separately. Encapsulation is often better for reducing discomfort during activity. Some bras even use special materials like gel, water pads, or air bags.

This invention changed how women participate in sports. In 1975, a company called Glamorise Foundations, Inc. sold the first "Free Swing Tennis Bra." Later, in 1977, Lisa Lindahl and Polly Smith created a general exercise bra. They worked with Hinda Schreiber to make it. They first called it a "jockbra" because they sewed two jockstraps together. They later renamed the product the "jogbra." One of these original bras is now on display near a theatre in Vermont.

Many different people have helped improve how these bras are made. Christine Haycock studied how breasts move on treadmills to suggest better straps. Renelle Braaten worked with designer Heidi Fisk to start Enell Incorporated. In 2001, Oprah Winfrey helped make these bras very popular after she tried one. In 1999, soccer player Brandi Chastain made a famous image by celebrating a win in her sports bra. This happened during the FIFA Women's World Cup in Pasadena, California.

Different activities need different levels of support to keep the body safe. Yoga and walking only need light control for the breasts. Bicycling or hiking requires moderate control for the person. Sports like tennis or football need firm support. For intense things like boxing or horseback riding, maximum control is best. Using the right bra can even help an athlete's stride. It can also help people like competitive shooters avoid touching their equipment.
