A sports bra is a special type of bra. It helps people feel comfortable during exercise. Many women wear them to stop pain from movement.

These bras are sturdier than normal ones. They can work in two main ways.

One way is called compression. This style holds the breasts firmly against the body. This helps stop bounce during hard workouts. The other way is called encapsulation. This style uses molded cups to fit around each breast. This can help reduce discomfort.

Sports bras use many kinds of materials. Some use stretchy fabric called Lycra. This fabric helps pull sweat away from the skin. Some even use air bags or gel pads.

Different sports need different levels of support. Yoga only needs light support. But running or boxing needs maximum support.

In 1977, Lisa Lindahl and Polly Smith made the "jogbra." They wanted to help women exercise without pain. Their big idea helped women play sports with more confidence. In 2022, they joined the US National Inventors Hall of Fame.
