Sling (medicine)

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A sling is a tool for a hurt arm. It is made of cloth or a similar material. You use it to limit movement. It helps the shoulder and elbow stay still. It can also protect the hand. This helps the injury heal.

A sling holds the forearm against the body. The arm can be held flat. It can also be held higher. Some slings are just a strip of cloth. You might use a triangular bandage too.

Many kinds of slings are made for doctors to use. Some are simple strips. Others are made of felt. Felt slings can cushion the arm from the elbow to the wrist. These often have a strap for the neck. They may use hook-and-loop fasteners to stay on. These fasteners help keep the sling in place. A sling is a helpful way to rest a hurt limb.
