Spokane acts as the economic and cultural center of the Inland Northwest. It is the second-most populous city in the state of Washington. According to the 2020 census, the city had 228,989 residents. The larger Spokane metropolitan area includes about 605,000 people.

The history of the region began with the Spokane tribe. Their name means "children of the sun" in the Salishan language. These people were hunter-gatherers who lived off plentiful fish and game.

Early human remains in the area date back between 8,000 and 13,000 years. In the early 19th century, European fur traders arrived. Explorer David Thompson led the North West Company's search for furs. In 1810, he helped establish the Spokane House trading post. This post sat at the confluence of the Little Spokane and Spokane rivers. It was the first significant, long-term European settlement in Washington. The post served as a fur trade headquarters for 16 years until 1826.

American settlement increased significantly due to the arrival of the railroad. The Northern Pacific Railway reached the area in 1881. At that time, the settlement was officially incorporated as Spokane Falls.

The city grew rapidly after the discovery of gold, silver, and lead in 1883. These minerals were found in the nearby Coeur d'Alene region of Idaho. This sparked several mining rushes between 1883 and 1892. Spokane became a vital trade center for prospectors. The city's economy relied heavily on mining, timber, and agriculture for many decades. This industrial base lasted until the 1980s.

A major disaster shaped the modern look of the city. On August 4, 1889, a catastrophe known as The Great Fire occurred.

The fire began just after 6:00 p.m. and destroyed 32 blocks of the downtown commercial district. Technical problems meant there was no water pressure at the pump station. Firefighters even used dynamite to raze buildings to stop the flames. One person was killed in the disaster. However, this event led to a massive building boom. The city was re-incorporated under its current name, Spokane, in 1891. Many older buildings in the downtown area feature Romanesque Revival architecture. Architect Kirtland Cutter designed many of these structures during the rebuilding process.

Spokane is known for several unique identities and cultural events. Locally, it is nicknamed the "Lilac City." It is also officially called "Hooptown USA." This nickname comes from Spokane Hoopfest, which is the world's largest basketball tournament. The city is also the birthplace of Father's Day.

The region's sports culture includes several professional and semi-professional teams. These include the Spokane Indians in baseball and the Spokane Chiefs in hockey. The Gonzaga Bulldogs are a well-known collegiate basketball team that competes at the Division I level.

The city offers many cultural and educational institutions. Residents can visit the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, which is affiliated with the Smithsonian.

The city features beautiful green spaces like Riverfront and Manito parks. Higher education is also a major part of the community. Gonzaga University was established in 1887 by the Jesuits. Whitworth University, a private Presbyterian school, was founded three years later. The city also serves as a religious center for several denominations. It houses the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes and the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

Spokane remains a critical transportation and shipping hub for the Inland Northwest. The Spokane International Airport is located west of the downtown area. It is situated near the Fairchild Air Force Base airfield. The arrival of the Great Northern Railway in 1892 helped connect the region to other markets. This rail line linked the Silver Valley mines with agricultural areas. Today, the city continues to serve as a central point for commerce and travel in the Pacific Northwest.
