Later, an explorer named David Thompson arrived in the region. In 1810, he helped set up a fur trading post. This was called Spokane House. It was the first long-term European settlement in Washington. It operated for 16 years as a headquarters for the fur trade. Eventually, the business moved north to Fort Colville.

Many new settlers arrived thanks to the railroad. The Northern Pacific Railway reached the area in 1881. At that time, the city was called Spokane Falls. It was officially incorporated as a city that same year.

Soon after, people found gold and silver in the nearby region. This led to many mining rushes between 1883 and 1892. Mining and timber helped the local economy grow. The city became a busy hub for shipping and transport. It connected many different areas through its rail lines.

Life in the city has not always been easy. In August 1889, a huge event called The Great Fire happened.
