One of the most important parts of Tacoma is its harbor. This area is called Commencement Bay. The bay is home to the Port of Tacoma. This is the largest port in the state of Washington. It is a major center for trade along the Pacific Coast. In the late 1800s, the Northern Pacific Railroad ended its path here. Because trains met ships at the bay, the city's motto became "When rails meet sails."

Many different people have lived in this area over a long time. For thousands of years, Native Americans lived in settlements on the delta. The Puyallup people were among the most recent groups to live there. In 1852, a man named Nicolas Delin built a sawmill near the bay. Later, a man named Job Carr built a cabin that served as the first post office. In 1875, the city was officially incorporated.

Tacoma has seen many big changes and even some hard times. In 1940, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge became famous for a strange reason. People called it "Galloping Gertie" because the deck moved up and down in the wind.

During the Great Depression, the city faced many struggles. In the winter of 1929 and 1930, there were very cold temperatures and power outages. Some people even lived in small shacks called a "Hooverville" on the waterfront. The city also had a famous movie studio that was once the third-largest in America.
