The city also borders the towns of Lacey and Tumwater.

Long ago, the Squaxin and other Coast Salish peoples lived here. They inhabited the southern Puget Sound region for thousands of years. In the 19th century, European and American settlers arrived in the area. This led to the Treaty of Medicine Creek in 1854. This treaty and the Treaty of Olympia in 1856 forced the Squaxin to move to a reservation. A leader named Chief Leschi fought for his people's right to their land. This struggle led to the Puget Sound War.

Many people helped shape the city over time. In 1846, Edmund Sylvester and Levi Lathrop Smith claimed downtown land. A man named Colonel Isaac N. Ebey suggested the name Olympia. He chose it because of the view of the Olympic Mountains. In 1853, the city became the capital of the Washington Territory. It was officially incorporated as a town on January 28, 1859. Later, it became a city in 1882.
