Spiral is a French television drama about the law and the police.

It follows the lives of officers, lawyers, and judges in Paris. Most of these people work at the Palais de Justice.

The show is a police procedural, which means it focuses on solving crimes. The title, Engrenages, means gears or gearing in French. This name has many meanings in the show. It can mean getting caught up in the works of a machine. It can also mean a cycle of bad things, like drug abuse or violence.

The show follows several different groups of people. Captain Laure Berthaud leads a police team in Paris. She is known for being very energetic and tough. Sometimes she uses methods that break the normal rules of the police. Her team includes Lieutenants Gilou and Tintin. Gilou is a long-time member who has struggled with drug abuse. Tintin is a more stable person who often worries about following the law.

At the court, Judge Roban works as an investigating magistrate. He is a serious man who wants to stay independent from politics. Pierre Clément is a young lawyer who tries to be very honest. He often faces pressure from his boss, Prosecutor Machard.

The stories in the series often start with a difficult mystery. In the first series from 2005, a woman's body is found on a rubbish dump. The police must find out who she was and why she died. In the third series, a woman is found on a railway track near La Villette. This leads to a hunt for a person called the Butcher of la Villette. Other stories involve things like bribery, arms trafficking, or money-laundering. These cases show how the police and the lawyers sometimes clash with each other.

Spiral has a long history of being made and shown around the world. The first series began on the Canal+ channel in France in December 2005. It was later shown in the UK on BBC Four in 2006. The show grew over many years with many different episodes. Series four, five, six, and seven each had 12 episodes. The final eighth series had ten episodes and aired in 2021.

The show was a big success and was sold to more than 70 countries. People watch it in places like Australia, Japan, Mexico, and Italy.

Because the show is so popular, it has won many awards. It is a good example of how a drama can show a whole city. The series moves between the busy streets of Paris and the quiet courtrooms. It shows how the work of a judge affects the work of a police officer. Even though the stories can be heavy, they show the skill of the people involved. Whether they are lawyers or police, they all try to navigate the complex system of justice.
