It stars Peter Falk as Lieutenant Columbo. He is a detective for the Los Angeles Police Department. The show is special because it uses a unique storytelling style. Most mysteries are "whodunits" where you guess the killer. Columbo uses the "howcatchem" format instead.

This means the audience sees the crime happen at the very start. You already know who the culprit is from the beginning. The real excitement comes from watching the detective solve the case.

Lieutenant Columbo has a very distinct way of acting. He wears a rumpled beige raincoat and drives a battered Peugeot 403 car.

He is often seen with a cigar and loves to eat chili. He also frequently mentions his unseen wife. Columbo acts very unassuming and even a bit messy. This helps him trick his suspects. He often pretends to be confused or not very smart. When he is about to leave a room, he uses his famous catchphrase. He turns around and says, "Just one more thing." This allows him to ask a critical question that catches the killer.

Creators Richard Levinson and William Link made the character. They were inspired by older mystery characters like Father Brown.

The character first appeared in a 1960 episode of a show called The Chevy Mystery Show. Before Peter Falk, an actor named Bert Freed played the role. Later, the story became a stage play called "Prescription: Murder." This play featured Thomas Mitchell as the detective in 1962. Eventually, the successful movie version led to the famous TV series. The show became a huge hit for the NBC network.

The series had a long and successful history on television.

It originally aired on NBC from 1971 to 1978. Later, it aired on ABC from 1989 to 2003. The show was very successful and won 22 different awards. Peter Falk won four Primetime Emmy Awards for his acting. He also won a Golden Globe Award in 1973. The episodes are usually between 70 and 98 minutes long. People in 44 different countries have watched these stories. The BBC even described the show as "timeless."

Columbo is a great example of how a character can surprise people. The suspects are often wealthy members of high society.

These people often look down on Columbo because he looks scruffy. They try to hide evidence or trick the police. However, Columbo is actually a hidden genius. He finds small contradictions in their stories to prove the truth. Watching the criminal realize they are caught is very interesting. Even though the crimes are serious, the show focuses on the clever game of wits. This makes it a classic piece of television history.
