Spelling pronunciation

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sometimes we say words by looking at the letters. This is called a spelling pronunciation. It happens when we say every letter we see. Many words have silent letters. This means we do not say them.

People often learn to read in school. This can make them say words as they are written. For example, some say the 'n' in the word kiln. Others do not say it at all.

Some words change over a long time. The word forehead used to sound different. Now, most people say it a new way.

New ways of speaking can become the new rule. This can happen to many words. It is a way that language grows and changes.
