A spear-thrower is a clever tool used to throw spears. It is also called an atlatl.

This tool works by using leverage. Leverage is a way to use a long part to make a movement bigger. The atlatl acts like an extra part of your arm.

To use it, you hold the tool in one hand. You place the end of the spear into a cup or a spur. The spear is much longer than the tool. When you throw, the tool helps you push the spear for a longer distance. This gives the spear more power and speed. A spear can fly at speeds over 150 km/h.

People have used these tools for a very long time. Some were made of wood or bone. Some even had stone weights called bannerstones. These weights helped the tool stay steady.

In the Americas, many cultures used the atlatl. In Australia, a similar tool is called a woomera. Some people even carved beautiful animals on them. You might see a mammoth or a snake on an old atlatl.
