This event was part of the Anglo-Spanish War. King Philip II of Spain led the effort. He wanted to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I. He also wanted to bring the Catholic faith back to England.

The fleet was very large and powerful. It was meant to change history in Europe.

The plan was very complex and required many steps. First, the fleet had to sail up the English Channel. They needed to meet an army in Flanders. This army was led by the Duke of Parma. The ships would carry the soldiers to England. Once they landed, they would work together to take control.

This was a very difficult task for the leaders. They had to coordinate many different groups at once.

Spain and England were once allies for many years. They had a long peace that lasted over 70 years. However, things changed when the religious leaders fought in Europe. England became a Protestant nation under Queen Elizabeth I. This made King Philip II of Spain very angry. He saw Elizabeth as a leader who did not follow the right faith.

This disagreement led to the start of the war.

The Spanish fleet was massive when it left Lisbon in May 1588. It had 141 ships in total. There were 10,138 sailors and 19,315 soldiers on board.

The fleet also carried 1,500 brass guns and 1,000 iron guns. The Duke of Medina Sidonia was the commander of the ships. He was a noble man but had little experience at sea. This made the mission even harder for the Spanish.

Fighting at sea is different from fighting on land. The English ships were faster and easier to move. They used better battle tactics and better naval guns.

At night, the English used fire ships to attack the Spanish. This caused the Spanish ships to scatter and lose their formation. Bad weather and strong winds also caused many Spanish ships to wreck. The Spanish plan did not work as they had hoped.
