The Falklands War was a short but intense conflict in 1982. It was an undeclared war between Argentina and the United Kingdom. The fighting happened over two British Overseas Territories in the South Atlantic. These places are the Falkland Islands and the islands of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

Argentina believed the islands were part of its own territory. However, the United Kingdom had ruled them as a Crown colony since 1841. The people living on the islands were mostly descendants of British settlers. They wanted to remain under British rule.

The conflict began when Argentine forces invaded the Falkland Islands on 2 April 1982. They also took control of South Georgia the very next day. In response, the British government sent a large naval task force to the South Atlantic. This group of ships and planes was meant to fight the Argentine Navy and Air Force.

The British also planned an amphibious assault to retake the land. This mission was given the name Operation Corporate. Admiral Sir John Fieldhouse was the commander of this task force.

Before the war, there were many failed attempts to solve the dispute. In 1965, the United Nations asked both sides to reach a settlement. The United Kingdom was willing to give up control, but the islanders refused. They did not want to be part of Argentina.

In 1971, a Communications Agreement was signed to help with trade. Later, in 1980, a British minister named Nicholas Ridley tried to suggest a leaseback scheme. This would have let Argentina manage the islands for a set time. The islanders strongly opposed this idea.

The war lasted for 74 days and ended with an Argentine surrender on 14 June 1982. The fighting was very costly for both sides. In total, 649 Argentine military personnel were killed. On the British side, 255 military personnel lost their lives. Three people from the Falkland Islands also died during the hostilities.

The war changed things in both countries. In Argentina, the loss led to large protests against the military government. This helped the country move toward democracy. In the United Kingdom, the government was re-elected with a larger majority the next year.

Diplomatic relations were finally restored in 1989 after a meeting in Madrid. Even so, the two nations still disagree on who owns the islands. Argentina even added a law to its 1994 constitution to claim them.
