Many people use flour from durum wheat to make it. This flour is sometimes mixed with vitamins and minerals. Some spaghetti is thicker, which is called spaghettoni. Other kinds are much thinner, like spaghettini or capellini. People love eating it with tomato sauce, meat, or vegetables. It is a delicious food that brings people together.

Making spaghetti involves a few important steps. First, grain is ground down into a fine flour. Then, it is mixed and kneaded with water.

Factories use machines called auger extruders to shape the dough. These machines keep the mix smooth so there are no air bubbles. The metal parts are cooled with water to keep the pasta from spoiling. Finally, the strands are dried carefully. This keeps them from sticking together or becoming too brittle.

The history of spaghetti is very long and interesting. It likely began as a thin bread in the Middle East. In the Persian Sasanian Empire, it was known as lakhsha. Later, people called it rishta when they cut it into strings.

In the 7th century, Arabs spread dried pasta to Sicily. By the 15th century, a writer named Martino da Como described making it. He said the dough should be cut as thin as a "spagho," which means string. Back then, people boiled it for two hours to make it very soft.

Spaghetti became a very important food in Naples around the 1600s. During this time, Naples had many famines and little meat. Because of new machines, pasta became cheaper for everyone to buy.

By 1955, Italians were eating much more spaghetti than before the war. In that year, Italy produced almost 1.5 million tons of it. People also began pairing it with tomato sauce in Naples. Today, many people enjoy eating it "al dente," which means it is firm to the bite.

You might recognize spaghetti from many places in your life. It is a famous scene in the movie "Lady and the Tramp." Some people even tell a legend about Marco Polo bringing pasta from China.
