Sozomen was a famous lawyer and a historian. He lived during the time of the Byzantine Empire. He was born around the year 400 in a town called Bethelia. This town was located near Gaza in a place called Palestine. His family was very wealthy and they were Christians.

Sozomen grew up hearing stories about his home. His grandfather was a man who studied holy books. His grandfather was well-loved by people in nearby cities like Ascalon and Gaza. This history helped shape who Sozomen became as a person.

Sozomen received a very good education. He learned from monks who lived in his area. These monks taught him how to study Greek very well. After his early schooling, he went to a law school. This school was in a place called Berytus. He studied there between the years 400 and 402.

He learned how to be a lawyer. Later, he moved to the big city of Constantinople. He worked there and perhaps even served in a royal court.

Around the year 443, Sozomen started a huge writing project. He wanted to write a history of the Christian Church. He wrote two different works about this history. His first work had twelve books. It covered the time from the Ascension of Jesus until the year 323.

His second work was written in Constantinople. He gave this second work to Emperor Theodosius II. This second work was divided into nine books. Each book focused on the time when different Roman leaders ruled.

We do not have all of Sozomen's writing today. His second work is incomplete. Most of what we can read ends around the year 425. Some people thought he might have hidden the end. They thought he did this because of an Empress named Aelia Eudocia. However, most scholars believe the work was just damaged over time.

He used many sources to write his books. He used the writings of Socrates Scholasticus and Eusebius of Caesarea. He even used stories that people told to him in person.

Sozomen's work is still very important to us today. It helps us understand how people lived long ago. His books tell us about many important leaders. They also tell us about how religious groups grew.

Many people have worked to print and translate his words. A version was printed in Paris in 1544. Another version was translated into Latin in 1612. An English translation was also made in 1846. These books allow us to read his discoveries today.
