The club competes in the National Rugby League (NRL). It is based in the Sydney suburb of Maroubra. The Rabbitohs represent the traditional heartland of inner-south Sydney. This area was once known for its working-class communities. Fans often use the nicknames "Souths" or "the Bunnies." The club is one of the most successful professional teams in Australian rugby league history. It has achieved twenty-one first grade premierships.

To understand the club, one must look at its organizational structure and facilities. The club's administration and training facilities are located in Maroubra. While they train there, they play their home matches at Stadium Australia in Sydney Olympic Park.

The team operates within the professional framework of the NRL. Players compete in matches to earn premiership titles. Success in the league requires intense physical skill and strategic teamwork. The club's identity is tied to its long history and its dedicated supporter base. This base is spread widely across the state of New South Wales.

The club has experienced several distinct eras of dominance and struggle. In the early years, they were a founding member of the New South Wales Rugby Football League. They won the inaugural premiership and defended it in 1909. Between 1925 and 1932, the club won seven out of eight premierships. During the 1925 season, the team went undefeated for 12 games. This era earned them the nickname "The Pride of the League."

However, the club also faced difficult periods. Between 1940 and 1948, South Sydney struggled significantly. Their longest losing streak lasted 22 games between 1945 and 1947.

Another significant period was the "golden era" from 1949 to 1957. During this decade, the club won five of six premierships between 1950 and 1955. The 1955 season is famously called "the miracle of '55." In that year, the team won 11 straight sudden death matches to claim the premiership. This era featured legendary players like Clive Churchill. Churchill was nicknamed "the Little Master" for his brilliant attacking play as a fullback.

Another period of success occurred between 1965 and 1971. In 1965, a young team defeated St. George in a Grand Final. This match was played before a record crowd of 78,056 people at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The history of the club is also marked by intense resilience. In the 1970 Grand Final, captain John Sattler led the team to victory against Manly. He achieved this while playing 70 minutes with a broken jaw.

Financial difficulties arrived in the early 1970s. The club's licensed Leagues Club closed in 1973. A "Save Our Souths" campaign helped the club survive these hardships. Later, the club faced exclusion from the NRL at the end of the 1999 season. This happened because the league decided to contract to 14 teams. South Sydney fought high-profile legal battles to return. An influential figure in this fight was board member Anthony Albanese. The club successfully won readmission for the 2002 season.

Since returning to the competition, the Rabbitohs have seen a major revival. In 2006, actor Russell Crowe and businessman Peter Holmes à Court took over the club.

This leadership helped lead to new success. In 2014, the Rabbitohs won their first premiership in 43 years. They defeated Canterbury with a score of 30–6 in the Grand Final. During this match, Sam Burgess won the Clive Churchill medal. He played the entire game despite having a fractured cheekbone.

This victory marked a triumphant return to the top of the sport.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs hold a significant place in Australian culture. In 2008, the club celebrated its centenary year. That same year, the National Trust named them the inaugural "Community Icon." This honor recognized their long-standing contribution to sport and culture. The club connects local identity to professional excellence. It remains a symbol of strength for its supporters. From its founding in 1908 to its modern era, the club continues to influence the National Rugby League.
