For many people in rural areas, a substantial soup was their entire meal. In times of hardship, soup-kitchens were set up to feed the hungry. In the 1840s, a chef named Alexis Soyer ran a kitchen in London. During the Irish famine, he even ran a kitchen in Dublin. These kitchens helped people get the food they needed to stay healthy. Soup remains a way for communities to care for one another.
