Songtsen Gampo was the 33rd king of the Yarlung dynasty. He is credited as the founder of the Tibetan Empire. His reign lasted from approximately 618 or 629 until his death in 650. He is famously known as the first of the "Three Dharma Kings of Tibet." This title recognizes his role in formally introducing Mahayana Buddhism to the region.

Through his leadership, he unified the Tibetan Plateau. He also expanded his influence by conquering lands adjacent to Tibet.

Details about his early life vary across historical sources. Some traditions state he was born in an Ox year. He likely ascended the throne at age thirteen. This was a common age for Yarlung kings to begin ruling. Some historians suggest birth years of 569, 593, or 605. His mother was a member of the prominent Tsépong clan. Her name is recorded as Driza Thökar.

Some religious histories even view him as a manifestation of Avalokiteśvara.

Songtsen Gampo utilized diplomacy and marriage to connect with neighboring powers. He had six consort queens. Four of these women were Tibetan. Two were foreign princesses. Princess Bhrikuti came from the Licchavi kingdom of Nepal. Princess Wencheng came from China.

These unions helped build ties between Tibet and other major civilizations. He sponsored the construction of two temples to house Buddhist images brought by these wives. One such temple is the Jokhang in Lhasa.

One of his greatest legacies was the creation of a written language. He sent his minister, Thonmi Sambhota, to India. The goal was to devise a script for Classical Tibetan. This new script allowed for the creation of court records and a constitution. It also enabled the first Tibetan literary works.

After the script was presented, the king spent four years learning it. He then translated twenty-one tantric texts regarding Avalokiteśvara. This established a foundation for Tibetan literature and administration.

Political changes also transformed the geography of his empire. He moved the capital from the Yarlung Valley to the Kyichu Valley. This area would eventually become the city of Lhasa. Before the king's arrival, the site was a herding ground called Rasa. This name meant "the place of goats." After he built the Jokhang Temple, the name changed to Lhasa.

Songtsen Gampo also facilitated the movement of technology and culture. He requested specific items from the Chinese Emperor, Gaozong. These included silkworms' eggs, wine presses, and mortars. He also sought workmen to manufacture paper and ink.

Other cultural imports included handicrafts and astrological systems from China and Western Xia. He gained the art of writing from India. He also imported model laws and administration from the Uyghurs of the Second Turkic Khaganate.

His influence remains visible in the religious and cultural landscape of Tibet. He is remembered as a king who brought both military strength and spiritual depth. Even his burial site remains a point of historical interest.
