They can be volunteers or people chosen by law to serve. Soldiers hold many different roles within a military group. Some are officers who lead others. Others are enlisted people or non-commissioned officers. Each person has a specific job to do. These jobs help the army work as one large team.

Many soldiers have special names for their specific jobs. These names often tell you what they do. For example, a tanker works with tanks. A medic helps people who are hurt. A paratrooper might jump from a plane. Some soldiers are called infantrymen or riflemen. Others might be engineers or signallers. Even nicknames are common in the military. In the United States, infantry are sometimes called "grunts." In the British Army, they are called "squaddies."

History shows that being a soldier has changed over time. The word itself comes from old words meaning a wage or a coin. In the past, many soldiers were forced to join through conscription. This is also called a draft. In the United States, men aged 18 to 25 must register for this. However, the U.S. has not had a draft since 1973. Most people now join by volunteering. They might join to help their country or for a job. Some join to be with friends or follow family traditions.

In the past, not everyone was treated fairly in the army. For a long time, most soldiers were men. During World War II, women served in groups like the Women's Army Corps. Later, women were allowed to join the main branches of the military. Race was also an issue in the United States. Black soldiers sometimes fought in separate units. Some were even called "Buffalo Soldiers" in the 19th century. This changed in 1948 when President Harry S. Truman ended segregation.

Soldiers usually serve for a set amount of time. This is often called a service obligation. In the U.S. Army, this can be between 2 and 6 years. Some people choose to make it a lifelong career. If a soldier serves for 20 years, they can receive a retirement pension. This is extra money to help them after they stop working. Soldiers are also a big part of our stories. You can find them in songs, movies, and even video games. They are a constant part of human history.
