Some soldiers have nicknames. In the United States, infantrymen are sometimes called "grunts." In the United Kingdom, they are called "squaddies."

People join armies in different ways. Some people volunteer because they want to help. They might want to serve their country. Others must join by law. This is called a draft or conscription.

In the past, things were not always fair. For a long time, most soldiers were men. Women served in special groups, but later they joined the main army. In the United States, race was also an issue. For a long time, Black soldiers were kept in separate units. This changed in 1948 when a new rule ended segregation.
