People join the military in different ways. Some are recruited because they want to join. Others are conscripted. This means the law requires them to serve. Most members are young adults. In 2013, the average age for a new U.S. Army soldier was about 21 years old. Many members are men, but many women serve too. The number of women varies by country. For example, about 16% of U.S. personnel are women.

New members must go through intense training. They learn to follow orders without question. This is often done through foot drill. This is a way of marching in an orderly way. Training helps them work as a team. It also teaches them to use tools and equipment. Some people may also serve part-time. This is called reserve service. They keep their regular jobs but train for a few days each year.
