How big is the Sun? Scientists use a special unit to measure it. This is called a solar radius. It is the distance from the center to the surface.

A solar radius is about 695,700 km long. This is a very large size. It is about ten times the size of Jupiter. It is also much bigger than Earth. One solar radius is 109 times the size of Earth at its middle.

Space tools use this unit to travel. The Parker Solar Probe flies close to the Sun. The Solar Orbiter also flies near it. These tools use solar radii to track their paths.

Stars come in many sizes. Some stars are much bigger than our Sun. A star called UY Scuti is 909 solar radii big. Other stars are much smaller. Proxima Centauri is only 0.1542 solar radii.

Measuring the Sun is hard. The Sun is not a perfect ball. It spins, which changes its shape slightly. Scientists use tools like the SOHO spacecraft to help. They watch Mercury move across the Sun to find the size.
