Solar radius

space Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A solar radius is a special way to measure distance. It uses the Sun as a ruler for space. Scientists use it to describe how big other objects are. They also use it to track how far things are from the Sun. This unit is very helpful for space travel. It helps people understand the scale of our solar system.

To find this distance, scientists look at the Sun's center. They measure out to a layer called the photosphere. This is the part of the Sun where light can pass through. The Sun is not a perfect sphere. It spins around, which makes it slightly flat. This shape change is called oblateness. It is very small, about 10 parts per million.

Measuring the Sun is a hard job. Scientists have used different ways to find its size. In 2003 and 2006, the SOHO spacecraft helped. It watched Mercury move across the Sun's surface. This is called a transit. Other studies used a method called helioseismology. This helps scientists find the true size of the photosphere.

One solar radius is about 695,700 kilometers long. This is about 109 times the radius of Earth. It is also about 10 times the radius of Jupiter. In 2015, the International Astronomical Union set a standard. They named the nominal solar radius exactly 695,700 km. This helps all astronomers use the same numbers. It prevents confusion when they talk about stars.

We can use this unit to compare many things. Some stars are truly huge. The star UY Scuti is 909 solar radii wide. Other stars are much smaller than our Sun. Proxima Centauri is only 0.1542 solar radii. Even planets are measured this way. Earth is only 0.009168 solar radii. Spacecraft like the Parker Solar Probe use these units. They help track paths near the Sun.
