The Sun is a very big star.

It is made of hot plasma and magnetic fields. Many things happen in the Sun's atmosphere. These are called solar phenomena.

One event is a solar flare. This is a sudden, bright flash of light. It lets out a huge amount of power. Sometimes, a flare leads to a coronal mass ejection. This is a massive burst of solar wind.

These bursts can reach Earth. They can even cause a geomagnetic storm. This is a change in Earth's magnetic field. Such storms can change how compass needles point.

Other events include prominences. These are bright loops of gas. They can stay for many weeks. You might also see sunspots. These are dark areas on the Sun's surface.

They are dark because they are cooler than the rest of the Sun. These events often follow a solar cycle. This cycle lasts about 11 years. This cycle helps us study space weather.
