A star is a huge ball of glowing gas.

It is held together by its own gravity. Gravity is the force that pulls things toward each other. The Sun is the star closest to Earth. Many other stars are far away. They look like tiny points of light in the night sky.

Stars begin inside a nebula. A nebula is a big cloud of gas and dust. The gas pulls together to form a star. Inside the star, a process called fusion happens. This is when gas turns into new things. This makes a lot of power. The power travels out into space. This is why stars shine.

A star's mass, or how much stuff it has, is very important. It decides how the star will live and die. When a star dies, it can leave behind a white dwarf. This is a small, leftover part of a star. Very big stars can become a black hole.

These stars also make new elements. These elements spread into space to help make new stars. Stars can also live in groups. Some stars orbit each other in a star system. Others live in huge groups called galaxies.
