Social rejection

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Social rejection happens when someone is left out of a group. This can happen on purpose or by accident. It can involve friends, family, or even a whole community. People might use bullying or teasing to push someone away. They might also use the "silent treatment" by just ignoring them. Some people call this process ostracism. In Ancient Greece, people even voted to banish others from their cities.

Humans are social beings who have a strong need to belong. A thinker named Abraham Maslow said that love and belonging are basic human needs. He believed all people need affection to stay healthy. It is not enough to just be near other people. We need stable relationships and good interactions to feel happy. Without these connections, people often feel very lonely. This is why rejection feels like such a big threat to us.

Researchers study how rejection affects children in school. Some children are very popular and get many positive ratings. Other children are in the middle and have moderate ratings. A small group of children are often rejected by their peers. Karen Bierman from Pennsylvania State University found common patterns in these children. They might struggle to share or take turns with others. They might also show more aggressive behavior or feel very anxious.

Being rejected can lead to many different feelings and actions. It can cause sadness, anger, or even bad dreams. Some people might feel less sure of themselves. It can also lead to a cycle where problems get worse over time. In a lab, scientists use a "ball toss" game to study this. A person plays a game where they are suddenly ignored. Even a few minutes of being left out can cause sadness.

Our brains actually react to social rejection in specific ways. A study found that the brain uses similar areas for social pain and physical pain. This happens in a part called the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex. Scientists also look at how people respond to images of rejection. Some people might become better at spotting fake smiles after being rejected. This shows that the brain tries to adapt to social changes. Learning new social skills can also help people succeed with others.
