Sochi is the largest resort city in Russia. It is located in the North Caucasus region of Southern Russia. The city sits along the Black Sea coast.

The name "Sochi" likely comes from the Ubykh-Circassian words "шъуа" and "ча." These words mean "sea" and "side." Therefore, the name roughly translates to "seaside" or "coast." The city is a major center for tourism and international events. It is also the longest city in Europe by territory.

The geography of the Greater Sochi Area is very unique. The city stretches for 140 kilometers along the coast. It is bounded by the Tuapsinsky District to the northwest. To the north, it borders the Republic of Adygea. The southeast border is shared with Abkhazia and Georgia.

Most residents live in a narrow strip of land near the sea. This area is divided into microdistricts like Adler, Khosta, and central Sochi. The landscape is defined by the Western Caucasus mountains. These mountains slope down directly into the Black Sea. Many rivers cut through these slopes to reach the water. The Mzymta and the Shakhe are the largest of these rivers. Other rivers include the Sochi, the Khosta, and the Matsesta.

Sochi has a humid subtropical climate, known scientifically as Cfa. This climate provides mild winters and warm summers. In the coldest months, such as January and February, the average daytime temperature is about 8 degrees Celsius. The sea temperature during this time is around 10 degrees Celsius.

In the hottest months, July and August, daytime temperatures often reach 28 degrees Celsius. The sea can warm up to about 26.9 degrees Celsius. The city receives approximately 2,200 hours of sunshine every year. This warm weather allows for unique plants to grow. You can find palm trees like the Sabal palmetto and Phoenix canariensis here. Sochi also contains the most northern tea plantations in the region.

The history of the region is very complex and involves many different groups. In ancient times, the Zygii people lived here under the influence of the Roman Empire. Between the 6th and 11th centuries, the area belonged to Georgian kingdoms. These kingdoms built many churches within the city boundaries.

Later, the Republic of Genoa established trading posts in the region. From the 14th to the 19th centuries, various tribes like the Abkhaz and Ubykh controlled the area. The Russian Empire occupied the coastline in 1829 following several wars. This led to the Circassian genocide, where many native people were killed or expelled to the Ottoman Empire. The population of the area fell from roughly 100,000 to 98,000 during this time.

Following the conflict, Russia began to colonize the coast starting in 1866. People from many places moved there, including Russians, Armenians, and Greeks. The settlement known as Dakhovsky Posad was renamed Sochi Posad in 1896. By 1900, the area began to grow into a popular sea resort. The first resort, called "Kavkazskaya Riviera," opened in 1909. Sochi officially gained town status in 1917. During the Soviet era, the city became a very fashionable destination. Joseph Stalin even built his favorite dacha in the city. This era saw the construction of many grand Neoclassical buildings.

In modern times, Sochi has become a global stage for major competitions. The city hosted the XXII Olympic Winter Games and the XI Paralympic Winter Games in 2014. Many of the alpine and Nordic events took place at the Rosa Khutor ski resort.

The city also hosted the Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix from 2014 until 2021.

Today, the Greater Sochi Area is a massive urban and natural system. About two million people visit the area every summer. The city is home to the annual "Kinotavr" film festival. Much of the land is protected by nature reserves. The northeastern part of the city belongs to the Caucasian Biosphere Reserve. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Most of the remaining area is part of the Sochi National Park. This ensures that the mountains and forests remain preserved alongside the growing city.
