The political status of Abkhazia is a central issue in international relations. It is a major point of contention between Georgia and Russia. While Abkhazia declared independence in 1992, most of the international community views it as part of Georgia.

The concept of recognition varies significantly across the globe. Only five United Nations member states formally recognize Abkhazia as an independent state. These nations are Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru, and Syria. Two other states previously offered recognition but later withdrew it. Because Georgia lacks effective control over the territory, it maintains a government-in-exile. This political divide stems from the Abkhazia conflict. The region previously held autonomy as the Abkhaz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. This status existed within the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic during the late 1980s.

The history of the region is ancient and complex. Between the 9th and 6th centuries BC, the territory was part of the Kingdom of Colchis.

Around the 6th century BC, Greek traders established colonies along the Black Sea coast. They settled in locations such as Pitiunt and Dioscurias. Classical authors recorded many different peoples and languages in the area. The Roman Empire later conquered the neighboring region of Lazica in the 1st century AD. Roman influence was mostly limited to port cities. The Abasgoi and Apsilae peoples were considered nominal Roman subjects.

Following the Roman era, the region saw shifting powers and religions. The Byzantine Empire held influence over the area for many years. Anacopia served as a major capital during this period.

During the 6th century AD, the Byzantines and the Sassanid Persians fought the Lazic War for control. Later, the Kingdom of Abkhazia united with the Kingdom of Georgia in 1008. This happened when Bagrat II of Abkhazia became Bagrat III of Georgia. By the 16th century, the Ottoman Empire began to exert significant influence. They attacked Sukhumi in 1453 and maintained a garrison there in the 1570s.

The 19th century brought major changes under the Russian Empire. Abkhazia first sought Russian protection in 1801. Russia declared it an autonomous principality in 1810.

However, Russia officially annexed the territory in 1864. This period involved the forced resettlement of many people. Between 1864 and 1878, a process known as Muhajirism occurred. Large numbers of Muslim Abkhazians emigrated to Ottoman territories. This migration involved as much as 40% of the Abkhazian population. Consequently, many areas were left uninhabited for a time.

Modern history has been defined by violent conflict. Simmering ethnic tensions led to the 1992–1993 War in Abkhazia. This war resulted in Georgia losing control over most of the territory. It also led to the ethnic cleansing of Georgians from the region. Although a ceasefire was signed in 1994, the dispute remained unresolved. In August 2008, the Russo-Georgian War broke out.

This conflict led to Russia formally recognizing Abkhazia. It also caused the termination of the United Nations Observer Mission. In October 2008, the Parliament of Georgia declared the area a Russian-occupied territory.

Despite these political struggles, the geography of Abkhazia is notable. The landscape includes diverse features like mountains and coastal areas.

The name "Apsny" is used interchangeably with "Republic of Abkhazia" in the local constitution. This name is linked to the etymology of the Abkhaz language. Some suggest it means "a land of the soul." Others interpret the literal meaning as "a country of mortals." These deep historical and linguistic roots continue to shape the identity of the region.
