It is built to move over deep snow. Most snowmobiles use skis at the front. These skis help the rider steer the machine. At the back, an engine drives a continuous track. This track helps the vehicle push forward.

In the past, people made snowmobiles in different ways. Some people used parts from Ford Model T cars. They added tracks and skis to the cars. Later, Joseph-Armand Bombardier made a new track system. This system worked well in all kinds of snow. He made large models that carried many people. These were used as school buses and ambulances.
