Skeleton (sport)

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Skeleton is a fast winter sliding sport. A single rider lies face down on a small sled. This sled is called a skeleton bobsled. The rider travels head-first down a frozen ice track. This sport is unique among sliding disciplines. Unlike bobsleigh, which uses teams, skeleton always involves a single rider. It differs from luge because luge riders lie face up and feet first. Skeleton is the slowest of the three major sliding sports. This is because the head-first position is less aerodynamic. However, this position allows the rider more precise control.

To begin a race, the athlete performs a running start. They push off from an opening gate at the top of the course. Once they reach speed, they lie down on the sled. The rider steers the sled using torque. They create this torque by moving their head and shoulders. The sled is thinner and heavier than a luge sled. This weight helps with the sliding motion. During elite racing, the experience is very intense. Athletes can reach speeds over 80 miles per hour. They may also experience accelerations up to 5g.

Skeleton grew from the sport of tobogganing in St. Moritz, Switzerland. English soldiers built a special track there in 1882. This track was different because it featured many curves and bends. In 1884, Major William Bulpett built the Cresta Run. This track was three-quarters of a mile long. It featured ten turns that are still in use today. In 1887, a man named Mr. Cornish introduced the head-first position. This style became common by the 1890 Grand National. In 1892, an Englishman named L. P. Child changed the sled design. He made it a more bare-bones design.

The sport has a long connection to the Olympic Games. Skeleton appeared in the Olympics in 1928 and 1948. It then disappeared from the program for 54 years. The sport returned permanently at the 2002 Winter Olympics. These games were held in Salt Lake City, Utah. At that time, a women's race was also added. The International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation, or IBSF, governs the sport today. The IBSF was formed after the FIBT was renamed in 2015. The federation adopted its current statutes in 2016.

There are several levels of international competition. The World Cup is the highest level of racing. Athletes compete for a trophy called the Crystal Globe. The IBSF also runs Continental Cups. These include the Europe Cup and the North American Cup. The Intercontinental Cup was a middle tier. However, it was discontinued after the 2022–23 season. There are also World Championships held in non-Olympic years. Junior World Championships are held every year for athletes aged 23 and under. These races help develop new talent.

Racing requires strict rules and careful planning. Athletes often spend three or four days training before a race. They must learn the specific details of each track. They must also complete several successful training runs to compete. In many events, skeleton races happen before bobsleigh races. This is because bobsleighs are heavier and damage the track more. The start order is also very important. Earlier starts are better because the track becomes less smooth. In multi-heat races, the start order changes for later runs.

Today, skeleton is a global sport. It is no longer limited to Switzerland. Athletes participate from many different nations. These include Australia, Mexico, Brazil, and South Africa. Some athletes even come from the Virgin Islands. The IBSF supports "emerging nations" with funding. They provide coaching, travel, and equipment assistance. In 2017, 20 national federations received support for men's skeleton. Another 11 federations received support for women's skeleton. This helps people from places without ice tracks join the sport.
