Six Flags Entertainment Corporation is a massive multinational amusement park company.

It serves as the largest regional amusement park operator in North America. The company manages a vast portfolio of 42 different properties. These locations include major amusement parks and water parks with on-site resorts. While most properties are in the United States, they also exist in Mexico, Canada, and Saudi Arabia. In 2024, the company hosted an impressive 50.3 million guests. This high attendance makes it the fifth-largest amusement park operator in the world.

Visitors experience the parks through various themed attractions and character encounters. Six Flags holds exclusive theme park rights to use Warner Bros. intellectual properties. This means guests can see Looney Tunes and DC Comics characters throughout the parks. At select locations, the company also features Peanuts characters.

To manage the flow of crowds, the company uses an expedited queuing system. This system is known as Fast Lane, which helps guests move through lines more quickly. These attractions and characters create a sense of excitement and shared joy for millions of people.

The modern company was formed through a massive merger on July 1, 2024. This event joined the former Six Flags company with Cedar Fair. The merger was an all-stock transaction involving a holding company named CopperSteel HoldCo, Inc.

Under this deal, Cedar Fair shareholders became the majority owners with a 51.2% stake. Six Flags shareholders held the remaining 48.8% stake. The two companies merged to gain financial stability and cost efficiency. They expected to find US$120 million in cost synergies within two years of completing the deal.

The history of these companies involves many decades of growth and change. The original Six Flags brand began with Six Flags Over Texas in August 1961. This park was created by Angus G. Wynne and The Great Southwest Corporation.

Meanwhile, Cedar Fair grew from the 1978 purchase of Valleyfair by Cedar Point. This led to the formation of the Cedar Fair Limited Partnership in 1983. Cedar Fair expanded by acquiring many parks, including Knott's Berry Farm in 1997. This specific acquisition gave them the rights to use Peanuts characters in their parks.

Both companies faced significant financial and operational challenges over the years. Six Flags experienced a period of growing debt and organizational bloat during the 2000s. The company even filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2009 due to the financial crisis.

Cedar Fair also dealt with high debt, reporting around US$2.2 billion in net debt by late 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic also caused major disruptions, forcing many parks to close in 2020. These struggles eventually drove the two companies to seek a merger for better survival.

Today, the combined company operates with a massive enterprise value of US$8 billion. This includes all debt and covers a diverse set of properties. The portfolio now consists of 27 amusement parks and 15 water parks. Additionally, the company manages 9 resort properties.

The headquarters are located in Charlotte, North Carolina. Significant administrative and financial operations remain in Sandusky, Ohio. The company continues to optimize its portfolio by managing or selling specific locations.

Six Flags is also expanding its reach into new global markets. The company signed an agreement to operate the Six Flags Qiddiya City theme park. This project is located in the Riyadh Province of Saudi Arabia.
