It is situated in Sandusky, Ohio, within the United States. The park is owned and operated by Six Flags. It is famously known as "America's Roller Coast." This number ties for first place in North America. It shares this record with Six Flags Magic Mountain and Canada's Wonderland. The park offers much more than just coasters. Visitors can enjoy a beach or visit Cedar Point Shores, an outdoor water park. There is also an indoor water park called Castaway Bay.

The grounds also include two marinas and the Cedar Point Sports Center.

The park operates on a seasonal schedule. The normal season begins in early May. It runs through Labor Day in September. After this, the park enters a special period. It operates on weekends only through Halloween. This seasonal event is called HalloWeekends.

During the regular season, the park manages huge crowds. In 2022, an estimated 3.44 million people visited the park. This makes it the second-most visited seasonal amusement park in North America. Only Canada's Wonderland has more visitors. The park has also earned significant prestige. It won the Golden Ticket Award for "Best Amusement Park in the World" for sixteen consecutive years. This winning streak lasted from 1997 to 2013.

Cedar Point holds several unique records regarding its roller coasters. It is the only amusement park in the world with five coasters exceeding a certain height.

These five massive rides are Magnum XL-200, Millennium Force, Valravn, Steel Vengeance, and Top Thrill 2. Additionally, it is the only park to feature roller coasters in all four height classifications. This variety ensures thrills for different types of riders. The park's history is also preserved through architecture. Several of its buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These sites serve as physical links to the park's long evolution.

The history of the peninsula began with nature and fishing. The area was originally named for its many cedar trees. In the late 19th century, the Lake Erie shore became a popular vacation spot. The middle class in the United States began seeking freshwater bathing resorts. Local fishermen once lived on the peninsula. Sandusky became an economic center due to its shipping harbor and two railroads.

These transportation links helped the tourism industry grow rapidly. The peninsula's transformation into a commercial destination began in 1870. This was the same year the park officially opened.

Louis Zistel is a key figure in the park's early commercial history. He was a German immigrant. In 1870, he began ferrying people to the peninsula by boat. His boat was named the Young Reindeer. He charged 25 cents per person for the trip from Sandusky. Zistel also opened a bathhouse and a beer garden. The beer garden included a small dance floor.

These early services established the foundation for public tourism. By 1882, other developers like Benjamin F. Dwelle and Captain William Slackford expanded the area. They built eight new bathhouses and wooden walkways. They also added picnic tables and a baseball diamond. In 1888, a major partnership created the Grand Pavilion. This two-story theater and concert hall featured a bowling alley. It was the first major effort to run the peninsula as a public resort.

The era of modern rides began in the 1890s. The first amusement ride was a water toboggan in 1890. This ride used a ramp to launch riders into Lake Erie. Electricity arrived at the park in 1891. The first roller coaster, the Switchback Railway, opened in 1892.

This coaster used two identical tracks side-by-side. One track was for the ride down. The other track allowed an attendant to haul the train back up. Later, George A. Boeckling managed the park during a period of massive growth. He transformed the picnic grounds into a national resort. He built the historic Hotel Breakers in 1905.

This hotel had 600 guest rooms and a large cafe.

As time passed, the park continued to modernize its attractions. The Midway Carousel was installed in 1946.

This remains the park's oldest still-existing ride. The Blue Streak, built in 1964, is the oldest operating roller coaster.

The park has also seen many changes in ownership and management. In 1974, there was a brief attempt to acquire the park through Marriott Corporation. This deal was eventually called off. Today, the park stands as a massive complex of history and high-speed engineering. It connects its 19th-century roots to modern, record-breaking technology.
