It serves as a major cultural hub where entertainment, music, and mechanical rides meet. The park is a massive destination for travelers and locals alike. In 2024, it welcomed 4.25 million visitors. This makes it the most visited amusement park in Scandinavia. It also ranks as the second-most popular seasonal amusement park globally, trailing only Europa-Park. Within Europe, it stands as the fifth-most visited park, following Disneyland Park, Efteling, Europa-Park, and Walt Disney Studios Park.

The park operates through a diverse collection of attractions that cater to different interests. Some visitors seek the high speeds of roller coasters, while others prefer the slow movement of carousels. Mechanical rides use various physics to create excitement. For example, the Aquila ride uses centrifugal force to spin riders at up to 4 g. This means the force feels four times stronger than gravity. Other rides, like the Tik Tak, rotate both vertically and horizontally. These machines are designed to provide specific sensations of speed, height, or rotation. Even the lighting plays a role, as colored lamps illuminate the gardens after dark.

Tivoli's attractions can be divided into several distinct categories. The first category includes thrilling roller coasters. These range from the historic wooden Rutschebanen to the modern steel Dæmonen. The second category consists of family and children's rides. These include the Animal Carousel and the Dragon Boats, where guests pilot their own vessels. A third category involves performing arts, such as the Pantomime Theatre. This theater features a unique mechanical peacock's tail as a curtain. Finally, the park offers musical experiences through its various concert halls and open-air stages.

The history of Tivoli began with Georg Carstensen, who was born in 1812. He obtained a five-year charter from King Christian VIII to establish the park. Carstensen argued that people would forget about politics if they were busy amusing themselves. The King granted him roughly 15 acres of land near the Vesterport, or West Gate. At its opening on 15 August 1843, the park was located outside the city limits. Early attractions included buildings in an exotic Oriental style and a primitive scenic railway. The name "Tivoli" was chosen to allude to the Jardin de Tivoli in Paris.

Music has always been a vital part of the Tivoli experience. Hans Christian Lumbye served as the musical director from 1843 to 1872. He was a famous composer known as the "Strauss of the North." Lumbye wrote many pieces specifically inspired by the gardens, such as "Carnival Joys." The Tivoli Symphony Orchestra continues to perform his works today.

The park also maintains a long tradition of pantomime theater. This style uses the Italian Commedia dell'Arte to tell stories through movement rather than speech. Characters like Harlequin, Columbine, and the servant Pierrot are central to these performances. Because there is no spoken dialogue, the shows are accessible to international tourists.

Tivoli has also shown great resilience during difficult historical periods. In 1943, Nazi sympathizers burned many of the park's buildings, including the concert hall. However, temporary structures allowed the park to resume operations quickly. During the occupation in World War II, saboteurs bombed landmarks like the Rutschebanen to break citizen morale. In response, government officials worked to renovate the coaster, reopening it just 25 days later. This ability to rebuild has defined the park's character for nearly 180 years.

The park's influence extends into broader culture and global entertainment. The name "tivoli" has even become a common word for any amusement park in several languages, including Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian. Its charm also reached the creator of Disneyland. Walt Disney once noted that his own park was inspired by the atmosphere of Tivoli. He echoed Carstensen's sentiment that a place like Tivoli is never truly finished. Instead, it continues to grow alongside human imagination.
