His path to success began with humble work in Rio de Janeiro. Born as Senor Abravanel to Sephardic Jewish immigrants, he started as a street vendor. At age 14, he sold plastic cases for voter registration cards. He later worked in radio and even joined the Brazilian Army. As a member of the Paratroopers Brigade, he gained discipline. He eventually found success by bringing a PA system onto passenger ferries. He played music and commercials while running raffle promotions for travelers. These early ventures taught him how to engage large audiences.

Abravanel's broadcasting career moved from radio to the television screen. In the early 1960s, he debuted on TV Paulista. He hosted a variety show called Vamos Brincar de Forca. In 1963, he launched the Programa Silvio Santos. This program became one of the longest-running shows in Brazil. He also managed the Baú da Felicidade business. This company provided Christmas toy chests that customers paid for in installments. He used his television presence to expand this business through partnerships.

In the 1970s, Santos transitioned from a performer to a media owner. He faced creative conflicts with executives at the Rede Globo network. To gain independence, he sought to own his own broadcast station. In 1975, he was awarded a concession for channel 11 in Rio. He launched TVS on May 14, 1976. To start quickly, he bought old transmission equipment at an auction. Many critics called the equipment junk, but it worked perfectly. It was even capable of broadcasting in color before it was standard.

The creation of the SBT network changed the Brazilian media landscape. After the military dictatorship closed Rede Tupi in 1980, Santos took over its signals. He combined these with his existing assets to form SBT in 1981. The network specifically targeted lower middle class and working class viewers. This strategy helped SBT become a major national force. He signed famous personalities like Hebe Camargo and Jô Soares to his network. His business success allowed him to build a massive media empire.
