Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a famous American singer and songwriter. She was also a master of the electric guitar. Many people call her the "Godmother of rock and roll." She was a star who blended religious songs with a new sound. This sound helped create the music we know today. Her music brought people together in both churches and big concert halls.

Tharpe had a very special way of playing her instrument. She was one of the first artists to use heavy distortion. This means her electric guitar made a loud, fuzzy sound. This style helped lead to the rise of electric blues. She often played with big bands behind her in nightclubs. She was also known for her amazing skill in guitar battles. People even said she could "play like a man."

Rosetta was born in 1915 in Cotton Plant, Arkansas. Her parents were cotton pickers, but music was in her family. Her mother, Katie, was a singer and a mandolin player. Rosetta was a musical prodigy who started playing at age six. By 1921, she was traveling with her mother in a religious troupe. She performed across the American South as a young girl. In 1934, she married a preacher named Thomas Thorpe. She used a version of his name for her stage name.

Her career saw many big moments and hits. In 1938, she recorded her first songs for Decca Records. Her song "Rock Me" became an instant hit. In 1944, she recorded "Strange Things Happening Every Day." This song reached number two on the Billboard "race records" chart. This term was used back then for what we now call R&B. In 1944, she was also one of only two gospel artists to record V-discs for troops. Her song "Down by the Riverside" was even added to the National Recording Registry in 2004.

Tharpe's music changed the history of popular music forever. She influenced many famous stars like Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry. Little Richard even said she was his favorite singer when he was a child. Johnny Cash also called her his favorite singer as a boy. In 1964, she even toured Europe with Muddy Waters. This tour influenced many British guitarists like Eric Clapton and Keith Richards. Even though she faced hard times, her music left a lasting mark.
