She was known for having a deep and earthy voice. Many people believe her singing helped bridge the gap between R&B and rock and roll. She could sing in many different styles. These included gospel, blues, jazz, and soul. Her voice was often described as gutsy and powerful. This allowed her to interpret many kinds of music with great skill. Because of her talent, she became a legendary figure in American music.

Etta's musical journey began when she was very young. She received her first professional vocal training at age five. She sang in a Baptist church choir in Los Angeles. She was a soloist even though she was just a child. Later, she joined a girl group called the Creolettes. This group later changed its name to Peaches. A musician named Johnny Otis helped her sign to a record company. He also gave her the stage name Etta James. This name was a version of her given name, Jamesetta.

Etta's life was full of both great success and hard times. She faced many personal problems during her career. These included drug addiction, physical abuse, and time in jail. These struggles caused her to stop recording music for ten years. However, she did not let these challenges stop her forever. In the late 1980s, she made a musical comeback. She released the album Seven Year Itch in 1988. This helped her return to the spotlight after a long break.

She achieved many big milestones throughout her long career. In 1955, she had a number one hit with "The Wallflower." Her most famous song, "At Last," was released in 1961. She won three Grammy Awards for her various albums. She also earned 17 Blues Music Awards during her life.
