Odetta's musical journey started with many different steps. She first began training in opera when she was thirteen years old. Later, she worked in musical theater with the Hollywood Turnabout Puppet Theatre. She also performed in a touring musical called Finian's Rainbow. After 1950, she began to focus mostly on folk singing. She became very well known by playing at clubs in New York City and San Francisco.

Odetta was born Odetta Holmes in Birmingham, Alabama. Her father, Reuben Holmes, passed away when she was young. In 1937, she moved to Los Angeles with her mother, Flora Sanders. Later, she took her stepfather's last name, Felious. While she was a student at Los Angeles City College, she worked as a domestic worker to pay for her studies. Her teacher noticed her talent early on. This helped her realize she had a special gift for singing.

Throughout her long career, Odetta earned many great honors. In 1999, President Bill Clinton gave her the National Medal of Arts. She also received the Living Legend Award from the Library of Congress in 2005.
