Lead Belly's life had many difficult parts. He was born on a plantation near Mooringsport, Louisiana. His exact birth year is hard to know. Some records say 1888, while others say 1889. He grew up in Texas and worked as a farm laborer. He spent time in prison in both Texas and Louisiana. In 1933, he was at the Angola Penitentiary in Louisiana. While he was there, two men named John and Alan Lomax found him. They were collecting folk songs for the Library of Congress. They used a portable machine to record his songs.

After he left prison, Lead Belly became a famous performer. He traveled with his wife, Martha Promise.

He worked with Alan Lomax to collect more songs across the South. In 1935, he had many recording sessions with the American Record Corporation. Even though he was famous, he did not make much money from records. He earned most of his money by touring and performing live. He performed at places like the Apollo Theater in Harlem. He also appeared on a popular radio show called "Back Where I Come From."

Lead Belly's music still matters to people today. He helped share the traditions of Southern black culture with the world. He was friends with many other famous musicians. These included Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. Because of his great skill, he received special honors. He was put into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. He was also added to the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2008.

His music remains a part of history.
