Cities can make special agreements to become friends. These are called sister cities or twin towns.

This bond helps different places share their culture. It also helps them do business together. Sometimes, towns choose friends because they have the same name. Other times, they choose towns that are similar.

This makes the connection feel even stronger.

Many people use different names for these links. In the United Kingdom, people often say "twin towns." In the Americas, the term "sister cities" is more common. In Europe, you might hear about "partnership towns." Some places in Italy call them "twinned municipalities." In China, they are called "friendly cities." Even in Iceland, they use the term "friend cities." These different names all mean the same thing.

Modern twinning really grew during World War II. It was inspired by the bombing of Coventry in England. The mayor of Coventry was Alfred Robert Grindlay. He wanted to show support for the city of Stalingrad. In 1942, he sent a telegram to the people there. Later, 830 women in Coventry worked together. They embroidered a tablecloth with a kind message. They also sent money to help.

This link was made official in 1944.

After the war, cities used twinning to find peace. They wanted to help former enemies become friends. Coventry twinned with the German city of Kiel in 1947. They also twinned with Dresden in 1956. In 1947, the town of Reading became the first British town to link with a former enemy city. That city was Düsseldorf. Another famous link is between Rome and Paris. They have been twinned since April 1956. They even have a special motto about each other.

Today, these links can be much bigger than just towns. Provinces and states can also be sister partners. For example, Alberta in Canada has many sister province links. They have links with places like Japan and Mexico. Some cities even use "city diplomacy." This means city leaders talk to each other about world problems. They might work together to fight climate change. It is a way for cities to help the whole planet.
