These programs help students see the world in a new way. They can learn about history and new cultures. Students also meet new friends during their travels. This helps them grow as people. It gives them a global perspective that they might not get at home.

There are different ways to join these programs. Short-term programs are also called STEP. These can last from one week to three months. They focus on things like language skills or community service. Long-term programs are much longer. These usually last from six to twelve months. Some students even stay for several years. Long-term students often attend a high school or a university. They might need a special visa to stay, like a J-1 or F-1 visa in the United States.

These programs became very popular after World War II. People wanted to help everyone understand and respect other cultures. They also wanted to help students learn new languages. These programs grew even more after the Cold War ended. Today, many students want to study abroad. They choose programs based on the location or the cost. Many students also want academic credit. This means their new schoolwork counts toward their grades at home. This helps them with their future plans.

Many things change how much a program costs. The price depends on the country and the school. Some students use scholarships to help pay. Others use loans or their own money. Students often live with a host family. They might also stay in a hostel or an apartment. Living with a family helps them learn how local people live. In Spain, living with a family can help students improve their Spanish. They might even learn new ways of speaking or new customs.

Many countries send students to study in other lands. In 2017, China sent over 928,000 students abroad. India sent 332,033 students. Germany sent 122,195 students. South Korea sent 105,399 students. Vietnam sent 94,662 students. France sent 89,379 students. The United States sent 86,566 students. Nigeria sent 85,251 students. These numbers show how much people love to learn about the world. It is a big way that people connect across the globe.
