Simon Kuznets was a very important economist. He lived from 1901 to 1985. He was born in Pinsk in the Russian Empire. This place is in modern Belarus today.

Kuznets was a man who loved big numbers. He used math and statistics to study money. He studied at the Kharkiv Institute of Commerce. Later, he moved to the United States. He studied at Columbia University in New York. He earned his Ph.D. there in 1926.

Kuznets changed how we look at a country's wealth. He helped create the idea of gross domestic product. People call this GDP for short. GDP tries to measure all the things a state produces.

He also looked at patterns in the economy. He found cycles that last 15 to 25 years. Many people call these the Kuznets cycles. He also studied how money is shared. He thought inequality might change as a country grows.

Kuznets did a lot of hard work for many nations. He helped the United States during the Second World War. He helped plan for making things needed for the war. After the war, he advised many other countries. He worked with China, Japan, and India. He even helped Israel build its systems.

His work was very famous and respected. In 1971, he won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. This is a huge honor for thinkers. He taught at many great schools. These included the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard. He even helped the U.S. Department of Commerce.
