The city was near a green oasis. A large canal helped plants grow there. This made the city very wealthy.

Many traders used the city to move goods. They traveled across the desert in groups called caravans. They brought gold to Sijilmasa to trade. One writer saw a bill for 42,000 dinars. That was a very large sum of money!

Many different groups ruled the city over time. A group called the Midrar family ruled for a long time. Later, the Almoravid group took control. They made coins in the city. Then, the Almohad group took over. This was a hard time for some people.

Eventually, the city fell apart. Some say it ran out of resources. Others say the people fought against their leaders. By the 1500s, the city was mostly gone. Today, you can still see the old ruins. They are a very important place for history.
