Walter M. Fleming and William J. Florence met in New York City. They wanted to make a group based on fun. Florence had seen shows in places like Cairo. These shows used Middle Eastern themes. Fleming used these ideas to make the group's costumes and symbols.

The group is known for its bright red fezzes. These are special hats. They also use symbols like camels and pyramids. Shriners often join big parades.
