Sholem Aleichem was a very famous Jewish writer and playwright.

He used a pen name that comes from a Hebrew greeting. The phrase "shalom aleichem" means "peace be upon you." He wrote many books in Yiddish, which was a common language for Eastern European Jews. His stories were special because they felt very real to people. They showed how people lived in small towns called shtetls.

Writing was a way for him to share life with others. He often wrote about characters who used natural speech. One of his most famous characters is Tevye the Dairyman.

These stories were so good they became a famous musical called Fiddler on the Roof. He also used his money to help other young writers. In 1888, he helped publish an almanac to give them a chance to be seen. Even when he lost his fortune in 1890, he kept working hard. He even translated stories from famous writers like Leo Tolstoy to help people in need.
