He moved to Jerusalem in 1881. At that time, the Ottoman Empire ruled the land. He wanted to bring back the Hebrew language for everyday use. He believed a nation needed its own living language to thrive. This was his great and important mission.

To make this happen, he had to build a new vocabulary. Ben-Yehuda worked with the Committee of the Hebrew Language. They created new words using ancient roots. They looked at Semitic languages like Aramaic and Arabic for help. This way, the language could describe modern things. He also started the first modern Hebrew dictionary. This huge book helped people learn how to use these new words correctly.

Ben-Yehuda's journey began in the Vilna Governorate. He was born Eliezer Yitzhak Perlman in 1858. As a young boy, he studied the Hebrew Bible in a school called a cheder. He later traveled to Paris to study at the Sorbonne University. In Paris, he met someone who spoke Hebrew in conversation. This meeting convinced him that reviving the language was possible. He felt a strong pull toward the land of Israel.

His life was full of hard work and big changes. He edited Hebrew newspapers like HaZvi and HaOr. He even raised his son, Ben-Zion, to be the first modern native speaker. Ben-Yehuda did not let his son speak other languages during his childhood.

This was a very bold way to teach a child. He faced many people who did not agree with his ideas. Some thought Hebrew should only be used for holy books.

Today, we see the results of his long struggle. Millions of people now speak Hebrew as their first language. This is a very rare thing in history. Before him, people used Hebrew for prayer, but not for daily life. His wife, Hemda, also helped finish his great dictionary work. Ben-Yehuda died in 1922 in Jerusalem. His funeral was a very large event with 30,000 people. His legacy lives on in every Hebrew word spoken today.
