For many years, it was the main way people spoke in the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. People often call it Lashon Hakodesh, which means the holy language.

This is because nearly all of the Hebrew Bible was written in it. It is a unique language because it is the only Canaanite language still spoken today. It is also one of only two Northwest Semitic languages with people speaking it right now. The other one is Aramaic.

Learning how Hebrew changed is like looking at a long timeline.

In the very beginning, people used a script called Paleo-Hebrew. This was used from about the 10th century BCE until the 6th century BCE. Later, people began using a different way of writing called the Imperial Aramaic script. This script eventually became the square Hebrew script we see today. This newer style is also known as ketav Ashuri, or Assyrian script. Even the way letters look has changed over thousands of years. You can see different shapes in old scrolls and new books.

History shows us that Hebrew has had many different lives.

It was the common language of the Iron Age kingdoms. Around the 6th century BCE, during the Babylonian captivity, the language began to change. For a long time, Hebrew was not used for daily talking. Instead, it was used for prayer, holy books, and even for trade. It was also used to write beautiful poems. Even when it was not a spoken language, it stayed alive through writing. This helped keep the culture strong through many centuries.

There are many amazing facts about Hebrew's journey.

In the 19th century, a man named Eliezer Ben-Yehuda led a great effort. He helped bring Hebrew back as a spoken language. This was a huge success for the whole world to see. By 1998, about five million people spoke Hebrew. By 2013, that number grew to over nine million people. Today, it is the official language of the State of Israel. The United States also has many Hebrew speakers, with about 220,000 people speaking it fluently.

Hebrew connects the ancient world to our world today.

You can find traces of it in many places. Archaeologists study old inscriptions like the Gezer calendar from the 10th century BCE. They also look at the Dead Sea Scrolls to learn about ancient writing. Even today, different groups use Hebrew in special ways. Samaritan communities use their own dialect for prayer. Many people around the world still study it to understand history. It is a living bridge between the past and the present.
