Shock and awe is a special way of fighting a war. The real name for this strategy is rapid dominance. It uses huge amounts of power to win very quickly. The goal is to make an enemy feel helpless. This is done by using spectacular displays of force. When an enemy sees this, they may lose the will to fight. This stops them from being able to react to what is happening on the battlefield.

This strategy works by using several important steps. First, a military must have total knowledge of the area and the enemy. Second, the actions must happen very fast. Third, the execution must be brilliant. Finally, the military must have control over the whole environment. This can include attacking command centers or stopping information from moving. It can also mean disrupting things like water, food, and transportation.

Two men named Harlan K. Ullman and James P. Wade wrote about this in 1996. They wrote a report for the United States National Defense University. They wanted a new way to fight after the Cold War ended. They believed that new technology would change how wars are fought. They thought the military would become smaller but use more information. This idea grew from an older concept called "decisive force."

History has many examples of using great force. Ullman mentioned the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In 2003, the United States used this plan during the invasion of Iraq. On March 21, 2003, a massive bombing campaign began. The forces launched about 1,700 air sorties. This included 504 missions using cruise missiles. Some Iraqi soldiers said the bombing made them feel they could not fight. However, other experts said the attacks were too precise to cause real shock.

This topic is very serious because it can hurt many people. The strategy can cause damage to things that regular people need to live. A group called Iraq Body Count said about 6,616 civilians died during the invasion phase. The United States military said they try to avoid hurting civilians. Some people also believe that this kind of warfare is wrong. They have even called it a form of terrorism. It is a very difficult part of history to study.
